Government Student Loans
Need and eligibility is based on status, educational costs and living costs during one continuous period of studies (not to exceed 12 months/application).
Government student loans are interest-free during schooling plus a grace period of 6 months afterwards. Often, students receive some of their funding in the form of grants. Student loans are alwasy preferable over student lines of credit available at banks, for these reasons as well as for repayment program options.
Apply within your province of residence prior to school - wherever you were last as a non-post-secondary student (for instance, attending Lethbridge College for one year will not make someone from Saskatchewan an Alberta resident - that individual would still be considered a Saskatchewan resident). Most provinces allow for electronic application - the most frequent application web sites for our students can be linked from here:
Lethbridge College Student Awards Office will direct the lender to remit ‘current’ term tuition and fees toward the student’s outstanding balance with the exception of daycare, laptop fees and residence - these are not allowed to be charged against loans and students must arrange to pay these; any remaining funds will be deposited in the student’s bank account.

- www.canlearn.ca - this web site also offers a Parental Contribution Calculator which provides an estimate on what parents of dependent students would be expected to contribute. The family income threshold for government student loans has increased significantly in the past years so more middle income families can benefit from the program. This is quick and easy and will give you a good idea of whether or not you should apply.
Loan Repayment Tips
The most important things to remember about loan repayment
- Never miss a payment
- While your grace period is 6 months and you do not have to make a payment over this time, interest is accruing, so it is in your best interest to make payments as soon as you can – you can do this during the grace period.
- If you have any trouble with payment, contact your lenders immediately: there are programs that can help with almost any circumstance – don’t ever just ignore your debt because you can’t afford it
- You can repay before the six months end – in fact you can make lump sum or one-time extra payments anytime (this will reduce your principal and repayment period or choose to increase your payments by even $20 a month and make a noticeable difference in interest saved and repayment term)
- You need to ensure that all of your contact information is current with both lenders (unless you are funded by an integrated province)
- Remember most provinces require two payments and one is always a lesser amount and will be paid off before your Canada Student Loan – when you receive your notice that your Alberta (or BC, or Manitoba) has been repaid, remember that you still owe on your Canada Student Loan (60% of your loan is the Canada portion)
- Changing your payments to biweekly instead of monthly can save you a lot of money and shorten your repayment period
- Interest rates is prime for Alberta (or you can lock in at the current prime rate plus 2%- this option is less popular
- The “floating” interest rate for Canada Student Loans is prime + 2.5% or you can lock in at prime + 5% (this is rarely recommended)
- Basically, the longer your repayment period, the more your loan costs you, so anything you can do to speed things up is to your benefit.
- If you have an Alberta Loan and you received the maximum loan amount, you may be eligible for the Alberta Loan Relief Completion Benefit – it would have been calculated into your final year as a grant as long as you indicated that you were in your final year – if you did not indicate that this was your final year of studies you should contact Alberta Students Finance as soon as possible to avoid paying extra interest 1-800-222-6485
- You can renegotiate your Alberta repayment terms with Edulinx at www.edulinx.ca anytime or 1-866-827-0310 and with the National Student Loans Service Centre at https://nslsc.canlearn.ca/eng/register.aspx or by calling 1-888-815-4514
Post Secondary Part Time Funding
Students taking fewer than 12 credits/term may be eligible for a Part Time Bursary of $600 or a Part Time Canada Student Loan. Students with very high need may be considered for slightly more depending on reasons for part time study.
Forms are available at Student Services and require authorization by Student Awards staff. Lethbridge College Awards will courier applications to Edmonton at no charge.
