<title>Brad Karren steps down as Kodiaks coach</title>
			<link>http://www.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1311&amp;Itemid=365</link>
			<description>

Brad
Karren, who built Lethbridge College's women's basketball program into a
perennial powerhouse during his 11 years as head coach, has stepped down.

 I've
focused much of my time and energy on the Kodiaks during the past 11 years,
said Karren July 19. As I have children of my own involved in sports, I think it's
about time I sat on the sidelines at their games for a while.

The
Kodiaks will begin looking for a replacement immediately. It won't be easy to
fill Karren's shoes.

Karren
was named Coach of the Year five times by the Alberta Colleges Athletic
Conference, and was the 2009 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association's Coach of
the Year.

During
Karren's tenure with Lethbridge College, the Kodiaks qualified for playoffs
each year and were national champions in 2004. The team also earned ACAC
banners in 2004 and 2007 and CCAA national bronze medals in 2003 and 2007.

 We've
been incredibly fortunate to have had Brad Karren at the helm of our women's
basketball program for so many years, says Tracy Edwards, Lethbridge College
president and CEO. He helped put the
Kodiaks on the national stage. Not only is he an amazing coach and advocate for
the college, he's been a great role-model for our student athletes.

In
the 2009-10 season, the Kodiaks again reached the national finals tournament as
one of two wildcard teams, where they finished seventh.

			<title>College names new athletics manager</title>
			<link>http://www.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1310&amp;Itemid=365</link>
			<description>

Lethbridge College has selected a veteran sports
administrator as its new athletics manager.

Bill Dean, until recently director of Student Life
at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton where he has spend the majority of his
career, assumes his duties with the Kodiaks Aug. 1

 I'm
looking forward to carrying on the strong tradition of athletic success at
Lethbridge College, says Dean. Through the selection process, it was clear
there is a strong internal leadership commitment to increase the profile of Kodiaks
athletics both on campus, in the community and nationally; I'm looking forward
to leading the change.

Krista
Pearson, Lethbridge College's associate vice-president of Enrolment Management
and Learner Services, under whose purview athletics falls, believes the Kodiaks
have their man.

 I
look forward to working with Bill, says Pearson. His extensive experience and
commitment should greatly benefit the Kodiak athletics program.

Dean
has been involved in Alberta intercollegiate athletic administration for 27
years. He holds a bachelor of physical
education, a master's degree in exercise physiology and a master's in business
administration, all from the University of Alberta.

His coaching experience is in volleyball,
basketball, golf and baseball, and has held executive roles with Alberta
Colleges Athletic Conference and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association.

Born
in Regina and raised in Edmonton, the father of two teenage daughters enjoys
golf, cycling and fitness training.

<title>College stocks city lakes with grass carp</title>
			<link>http://www.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1305&amp;Itemid=365</link>
			<description>

Lethbridge College is releasing 880 grass carp into Henderson Lake and
Nicholas Sheran Lake this spring, part of a program to improve water quality and make
the lakes more usable for recreation.

The carp, raised at the college's Aquaculture Centre of Excellence, consume
their body weight in weeds daily, providing help with weed control. This
program has been around for several years; because the fish have been
sterilized to prevent reproduction, additional carp are added to the lakes
every few years to maintain a healthy population.

This Grass Carp Stocking program is ongoing and we
are encouraged by the improvements in water quality in Henderson Lake since the
program began, says Dave Ellis, City Parks manager.

In addition
to the fish, water circulation pumps (SolarBees) have been running for a few
summers as well.

			<title>College goes forward with wind-energy grant</title>
			<link>http://www.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1297&amp;Itemid=365</link>

May 6, 2010 - Rural Alberta's Development Fund (http://www.ruralalbertasfund.com/index)
(RADF) has announced a $1.2-million contribution to Lethbridge College to
establish southern Alberta as a world leader in the wind- energy sector.

In
partnership with several Canadian and international energy companies,
Lethbridge College will use the funding to develop long-term, durable training
programs, educational products and stakeholder coalitions.

 The expected results
of this project include retention of rural residents through access to
high-quality employment, increased income diversification, economic
sustainability and development of educational programming that can be adopted
by other regional industries across Alberta.

 We're
proud to play a continued role in this vital and sustainable alternate-energy
resource, says Tracy Edwards, president and CEO, Lethbridge College. The
college is already established as a leader in training for the wind-energy
sector. We see this as a natural progression of our commitment to keep southern
Alberta on the cutting edge of this technology.

Lethbridge
College's nationally recognized Wind Turbine Technician program is a
combination of theory and hands-on lab practice on training turbines. This
combination provides students with comprehensive knowledge and skills that make
them employable around the world.

<title>Nursing instructor files first Lethbridge College patent </title>
			<link>http://www.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1279&amp;Itemid=365</link>
			<description>

A nursing instructor and her business partner have filed the first
patent from Lethbridge College for a device to add realism to patient
simulations.

Karen Kennedy, co-ordinator of Lethbridge College's Simulated Patient Health Environment for Research and
Education (SPHERE) lab, teamed with Colleen Ward to create Simleggings.

Simleggings are designed to zip over the ankles and lower legs of a
human patient simulator to display pitting edema, a symptom resulting from an
abnormal accumulation of fluid in body tissues, indicative of specific diseases
of the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys.

Kennedy, who holds a bachelor of science in nursing and a master's of
education, has facilitated simulated clinical experiences for the past five
years with health-care students and professionals, and has participated in the
design and set up of simulation units.

Those of us who facilitate learning with simulated patients recognize
the importance of creating as real a client presentation as possible, says
Kennedy. Student learning is optimized when their senses of sight, touch,
hearing, smell and yes, in some cases, taste are engaged.

One of the most popular simulated experiences for our nursing students
has involved a patient with chronic heart failure who goes into cardiac and
respiratory arrest. In this scenario, we do several things to make this client
as realistic as possible. What we didn't have was a way to display pitting
edema.

Simleggings can be used on standardized patients (people trained to
mimic a client with a particular illness/disease), or modeled in the classroom
by instructors and students. They exhibit the characteristic pitting when
pressure is applied to the material and can be made in a variety of skin colors.

Ward, who lives in Stirling, holds a bachelor of science in home
economics, is an experienced seamstress and was instrumental in the design and
manufacture of Simleggings.

			<title>College launches green initiative</title>
			<link>http://www.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1259&amp;Itemid=365</link>
			<description>

For
the next six months, Leona Rousseau and Dave McRae, the campuses' newly
appointed green champions, will head up a innovative office and steer the
campus towards a united approach to its green initiatives under the slogan Let
Your Green Be Seen.

Lethbridge College officially launched its Green Leadership
Office (GLO) Feb. 10.

Rousseau, program chair for the college's Interior Design
program and provincial chair of the Communities of Practice initiative of the
Alberta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes, is a green champion
in every role she takes on. McRae, an instructor in the School of Environmental
Sciences, spreads the seed of sustainability everywhere his job takes him.

 We're
continually striving for environmentally friendly ways to engage our students,
staff and the community in which we live, says Tracy Edwards, college
president and CEO. With its GLO, the college has an opportunity to explore the
limits and quite possibly push beyond them into a future that's based on green
technologies and green careers while setting a standard for others to follow.

The
GLO's primary focus is to conduct a sustainability audit of the college to
determine, identify, assess and document existing sustainable initiatives and
practices across the campus. The audit will examine sustainability, utilizing a
comprehensive, triple-bottom-line approach, capturing environmental, economic
and social data and activity in three key areas: curriculum and research;
operations and maintenance; and planning and administration.

Lethbridge
College won the 2010 Award of Recognition for Innovation in late January for
its Living Home (http://www.thelivinghome.ca/) project at SouthGrow's annual Creating Opportunities Awards.
The college shared the award with its partners, Cedar Ridge Quality Homes and
the City of Lethbridge. The project combined faculty expertise and student
enthusiasm to create a residential home designed to minimize the environmental
impact of construction, maintenance and operation of a single-family
residential home using proven sustainable, economic and accessible construction
practices and technologies. The college shared with the public its findings
from the project and subsequent research. Congratulations to the project's two
lead faculty, Braum Barber and Mark Bohnert, Engineering Technologies.

			<title>Hubbard Wildlife Collection goes digital</title>
			<link>http://www.lethbridgecollege.ab.ca/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1246&amp;Itemid=365</link>
			<description>

LLLethbridge
College
has launched the first digital version of its Hubbard Wildlife Collection to
make the unique learning resource accessible to its students and the world.

In its debut, the Hubbard
Virtualization project puts 60 species online with information on
habitat, migration, diet, reproduction and conservation status. Site visitors
can then call up a 3-D image of the species and rotate the image 360 degrees.
The project has the potential to offer a 3-D skull image, video and audio
information, tracks and range, and learning activities, making it one of the
most comprehensive digital wildlife information sites in Canada.

Funded in part with a $90,000 grant from Inukshuk
Wireless, a subsidiary of Bell Canada and Rogers Communications, the $168,000
project was headed by Shane Roersma, an instructor in Lethbridge
College's School of Environmental
Science. Introduced to students in December, it
has already proven a hit with program students.

The real utility of this project is its use as a
learning tool, says Roersma. With the large number of species our students
have to identify, visual recognition is not always enough. This puts a huge
amount of information at their fingertips. We anticipate it will lead to
information retention and higher grades.

Roersma says the Hubbard digitization can also be
implemented in southern Alberta
school districts, which expressed an interest when the project was first
initiated more than a year ago.

The collection, the most comprehensive of Alberta wildlife, was donated to Lethbridge College
in 2007 by the family of Alf Hubbard. It is housed on campus and is available
to public viewing, but the digitization now offers it to the world at a mouse
click.

The collection is much larger than the initial 60
species; next to be digitized are 35 waterfowl species. Each animal must be photographed
360 times, information on each researched and written, and the website
presentation developed.

The site is partnered with the Alberta Birds of Prey
Centre in Coaldale. Some 150 Lethbridge
College students already
using the site, including students in zoology, wildlife and comparative animal
biology.

Karen Harker, head of Lethbridge College's
Educational Enhancement Team, says elementary and secondary schools have
indicated they will use the Hubbard digitization in outdoor education classes
and for special projects as a research tool.

It's changing the way students study, says Harker,
whose team oversaw the technical development of the site. This is a public
website, allowing students at all levels to study from home. Others may include
similar information, but the 3-D aspect makes ours unique.
