“I like that I am learning about what I am interested in – not like in high school.”

Amanda Hofman

While researching the program at Lethbridge College's Career Conference and Open House, Amanda took part in the Newscaster for a Day contest. Online votes made her the winner and awarded her the chance to co-host the weather with Global Television’s Mark Campbell.

If you’re plugged into the world at all, you’ll notice the effect the media have on all we say and do.

From newspapers, to 24-hour news channels, to your favourite radio station, to the advertising messages that help support it all, it’s a complex industry. It’s exciting. It’s challenging. And we’ll teach you the skills that can make it a part of your world.

Tune in to Communication Arts and you could find yourself on the air, behind the scenes, in print, spreading the news, helping people understand the issues, or working with clients to share the words and images they need to portray. Our program is taught by instructors who have been there, done that. Do you want to know what it’s really like to work in this industry? They’ll tell you.

You’ll get the straight goods on what it takes to be a reporter, editor, public relations specialist, graphic designer, broadcast journalist or advertising account executive.

That’s the kind of knowledge best taught by those who have actually worked in the industry.

You’ll get the basics in the first year, learning facets of communication common to all areas of study. But that’s only the beginning. In your second year, you’ll work in your chosen major:

  • Print Journalism
  • Broadcast Journalism
  • Advertising & Public Relations

We offer a fast-track option for incoming students choosing Print Journalism or Advertising & Public Relations who already hold a degree.

You may be working on The Endeavour, our campus newspaper, or with CRLC, our campus radio station that reaches the world with its online webcast. You’ll gain TV experience working in our College studios and also with local broadcasters. Local organizations will provide you with opportunities to learn and practice your skills, working in newsrooms, planning public relations campaigns and creating advertising.

For the icing on the cake, we’re going to enhance your experience by setting you up with a 150-hour practicum that will give you the valuable ‘real-world’ experience that catches the eye of potential employers.

Career opportunities include:

  • Radio/TV/Newspaper reporters, anchors or producers
  • Graphic or Web designers
  • Public Relations practitioners
  • Marketing or Sales professionals
